The Importance of Extra Curricular Music at ACS Doha

Students at ACS Doha participate in various extra curricular music ensembles, which include the ACS Doha LS and MHS Band, the LS Choir and the MS G8 Band. The department is diverse and continues to promote music-making across the Arts, with students enjoying the opportunity to display their talents at key events during the academic calendar. The most recent events at which ACS Doha students have performed include various school assemblies, the ‘Express Yourself’ Music and Dance Event, Creative Day and Family Fun Day.

Community involvement, such as the Doha Youth Choir and events like the ABRSM High Scorer’s Concert held at the Qatar Music Academy, help students studying the IB program to not only gain valuable experience working collaboratively with others, but also to be able to learn to articulate themselves confidently, clearly and persuasively within a variety of environments.

For students who want to develop their skills further, we offer private, music tuition after school so that they are able to learn instruments like the guitar, drums, cello and piano and continue to expand and hone their talents. This initiative is open for G3 through to G12 students.

Tour of Germany 2016

Our commitment to the Doha Youth Choir

Many people ask the same questions: Why waste your time in a choir? Why spend six hours every week dedicated to learning new music and singing? Here’s how we’d like to respond; when you share experiences and frustrations within the boundaries of a rehearsal hall, with those who have a common passion and dedication to singing, it makes the entire shared experience worthwhile!

2016 marked the Doha Youth Choir’s very first international Tour of Germany where 36 choristers, with a repertoire of 13 songs, travelled to Berlin and Hamburg to perform.

First stop – Berlin!

For some, packing our suitcases and boarding the airplane for Berlin, in itself was a first! Many of us hadn’t visited Germany or even travelled to Europe before.  After travelling for 8 hours without sleep, the group finally reached Berlin. Although exhausted, the moment we saw the breathtaking scenery, our energy and excitement returned.  As a choir tour, our passion for singing travelled with us; adventures on a subway had the choir singing Disney songs until the whole carriage was immersed in song! Following a lengthy workshop, a rehearsal with our host choir and the final performance, we departed for Berlin.

Second stop – Hamburg!

The journey from Berlin to Hamburg took over 3 hours. When we arrived, we were joyfully welcomed by our host families. We visited many amazing sites and places over the coming days. We took a memorable boat tour from Hamburg Harbour, visited the Miniature Museum and the Hamburg Dungeon and took part in a walking tour of Hamburg.

Special bonds were created between host families, both in Berlin and Hamburg, and new friendships were formed as we rehearsed and sung at the various venues in Germany.

The final concert involved the Hamburg Girls Choir, with over 100 choristers singing in perfect harmony to make the culmination of our Doha Youth Choir tour an incredibly memorable experience!
